Sobald das zentrale Panel eines Altarwerks, dieses Gemälde gleichzeitig die Anbetung des Christuskindes und die Annunciation zu den Hirten, in der oberen rechten gezeigt. Um klare räumliche Zusammenhänge zu schaffen, beschäftigte der Künstler überlappende Ebenen und wagte, wenn naive, Perspektive – am meisten im projizierenden Dach des Stalls. Die Einstellung der Erzählung verbindet die byzantinische Tradition, die Adoration in einer Höhle mit der westlichen Ikonographie eines Stalls zu repräsentieren. Dieses Panel kann von einzelnen Panels flankiert worden sein, die stehende Heilige darstellen.
