Die neue Richtung der Veronese-Malerei im 17. Jahrhundert wird vor allem in den Werken von Marcantonio Bassetti identifiziert, deren Porträts außergewöhnliche moralische Kraft besitzen. Dieses Porträt kommuniziert die absolute Eitelkeit und Vergänglichkeit des Lebens und vermeidet jeglichen Bezug auf den sozialen Zustand oder Ursprung der Person portayed. Das einzige materielle Element ist die obenstehende Inschrift, die das Datum (1626) und das Alter (85 Jahre) gibt, aber nicht den Namen des Mannes.
