La signora Claxton e suo figlio William abbracciano mentre la signora Claxton si alza dalla lettura. Una tale rappresentazione informale è animata dalle qualità della luce, dal forte scintillante della spilla e della sedia posteriore, alla diversa morbidezza del taffeta, del velluto e del merletto. Carpenter ha mostrato talento all'inizio della vita. Quando questo dipinto è stato fatto, è stata la più importante ritrattista femminile in Gran Bretagna, famosa per la sua tecnica. Ha esposto regolarmente alla Royal Academy fino al 1866. Suo marito, William Carpenter, era custode di stampe e disegni al British Museum. Il loro grande nipote era l'artista californiano Percy Gray.
