HIDA Shūzan è stato un artista che ha contribuito alla fioritura delle arti giapponesi nell'era moderna. La sua città natale di Izura, Prefettura di Ibaraki, divenne un centro di pittura giapponese dopo che OKAKURA Tenshin visitò Izura su invito di Hida. Okakura, insieme ad altri importanti pittori giapponesi come YOKOYAMA Taikan, non solo ha stabilito un luogo di studio artistico in Izura, ma ha anche trasferito la divisione pittura del Japan Art Institute (Nihon Bijutsuin) alla città. Vedere questi artisti al lavoro ha ispirato Hida nelle sue ricerche creative. I suoi dipinti, spesso di paesaggi o di scene storiche, uniscono grande dettaglio con rigorosi pennelli.
