Esta última escena, comúnmente del arte bizantino, no viene de la Biblia sino de uno de los evangelios apócrifos, el Nicodemo. Se dice que cuando Cristo es depositado en la tumba, él baja al limbo para liberar a los justos, que no habían sido capaces de adherirse a la fe cristiana, los personajes que estaban delante de él, eran del Antiguo Testamento. Por eso está representado junto a Adán y Eva y otros que han sido identificados como Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moisés y David. En cuanto a Cristo, él se representa sin barba porque lo que desciende al limbo es su alma y el alma en la Edad Media fue representado como un niño.
