This canvas is one of 34 painted by Meijer de Haan in Le Pouldu and gifted to Marie Henry, owner of the Buvette de la Plage where he boarded. Paul Gauguin lodged there with his Dutch student, who paid the master’s room and board in exchange for painting lessons. They worked side by side on still life scenes such as this, and de Haan adopted his characteristic blue contour lines and saturated colours tending towards the darker end of the palette.
