In die Dekorationsverkleidung über eine Tür eingeschoben zu werden, macht dieses Gemälde von unten aus den Sinn. Aus diesem Blickwinkel täuschen die dramatische Perspektive, die Schatten und die Unterbrust der Vase das Auge in den Glauben, dass dies überhaupt kein Gemälde ist, sondern die Sache selbst. Dieses Werk gehörte einmal Georges Hoentschel (1855–1915), einem Innenarchitekten, der Objekte aus seiner Sammlung als Modelle und Inspiration für seine Projekte nahm. Um 1905 nutzte Hoentschel dieses Gemälde als Grundlage für neue Louis XVI Stil Overdoors im englischen Landhaus Luton Hoo.
