Die elektrische Straßenbahn in Lima machte 1904 ihren ersten Auftritt. Seine erste Route war die Lima-Chorrillos Route, von einem Bahnhof in der Plazuela de la Exposición (heute Plaza Grau). Die zweite Strecke war die Lima-Callao Route, ausgehend vom Platz San Juan de Dios (auf einer Ecke des aktuellen San Martin Square) und endete in La Punta. Bis 1918 hatte Lima 39 Kilometer Straßen, und bis 1923 stieg es auf 166 Kilometer und hatte sogar eine Erweiterung geplant. Doch ab Mitte der 1920er Jahre ging der Straßenbahnservice aufgrund des Wettbewerbs von billigeren Fahrbussen sowie betrieblichen Problemen zurück. Im Laufe der Zeit begann die Straßenbahn der Erzeugung und Verteilung der elektrischen Energie gewidmet zu sein, und bis 1965, sie blieb völlig in der Hauptstadt arbeiten.
