La ricca borghesia urbana del Rinascimento italiano amava rifugiarsi dal caldo estivo o dalle epidemie nelle loro ville di campagna. Come racconta Boccaccio nel Decameron, qui si sarebbero rilassati, con storie istruttive e divertenti, musica, danza e conversazione spiritosa - in altre parole, hanno reso omaggio alle muse. Non era una coincidenza, allora, che spesso adornavano le pareti con le immagini delle muse. Questo è stato il caso in quello che è stato forse uno dei più famosi ritiri estivi, i duchi di Ferrara
