Mierevelt fue uno de los retratistas más buscados de La Haya, aunque nació y murió en Delft, y mantuvo un gran taller para satisfacer a todos sus clientes. Muchos de sus retratos también traicionan la mano de un alumno. Esto, sin embargo, es uno de los retratos más poderosos y conmovedores de todos los Mierevelts de los viejos y debe ser totalmente su propio trabajo.
