Un musicista dotato, Fanny Hensel (1805–1847) era la sorella maggiore del compositore Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy e nipote del grande filosofo ebraico e figura dell'illuminismo Moses Mendelssohn. Come suo fratello, fu battezzata e cresciuta come protestante. A partire dal 1831, ha ospitato un salone musicale che si è incontrato settimanalmente a casa sua. Ha programmato ogni concerto, suonato il pianoforte, diretto e composto musica. Suo marito, il pittore di corte Wilhelm Hensel, ha collaborato all'aspetto visivo delle performance. Ha fatto amicizia con Moritz Oppenheim, che ha dipinto questo ritratto della sua moglie di talento, quando entrambi gli artisti erano a Roma durante i primi anni 1820.
