Il precipizio precipizio disegnato sullo schermo sinistro suggerisce un sito sul fiume Yangzi dove il poeta cinese Su Shi, noto anche come Dongpo (1037–1101), compose il suo famoso “Ode on the Red Cliff”. La scena più dolce sullo schermo destro, raffigurante uno studioso e assistenti in una capanna in un solco saliente, è destinata a rappresentare il poeta-recluso cinese Tao Qian, o Tao Yuanming (365–472), al suo ritiro di campagna. L'artista sembra aver creato un contrasto esplicito tra le due scene— L’esilio forzato di Su (wild) contro l’esilio autoimposto di Tao (calm). Nato in una famiglia di samurai vicino alla capitale, Nagasawa Rosetsu scelse la vita di un pittore, studiando nello studio di Kyoto di Maruyama Ōkyo (1733–1795). Etichettato uno dei “Tre Eccentrics” del periodo Edo, ha spesso esposto uno stile turbolento, spazzola bravura e trattamento non convenzionale della materia soggetto.
