Questo dipinto raffigura lo statista-poet-scholar Sugawara Michizane (845–903) come Tenjin, l'essere deificato è diventato dopo la sua morte ingiusta in esilio, e le calamità il suo spirito arrabbiato inflitto alla corte imperiale a Kyoto. Dopo la sua deificazione, Michizane fu venerato come dio dell'agricoltura e patrono dei falsamente accusati. Un aspetto in cui egli è spesso rappresentato è quello di “Totō Tenjin”, o Tenjin, sulla sua strada verso la Cina per visitare un maestro buddista Zen. La visione di Rosetsu di Totō Tenjin riflette il primo stile dell'artista, quando fu fortemente influenzato dal modo deliberato e naturalistico del suo maestro, Maruyama Ōkyo (1733–1795), fondatore della scuola Maruyama.
