Der Hahn, Vertreter des patriarchalen Leiters der Familie – pro konfuzianischer Ideal – war ein beliebtes Thema in der chinesischen und japanischen Malerei der vormodernen Ära. Hier sind die Vögel vor einem Hintergrund der grauen Farbwäsche in Negativweiß silhouettet. Zusammen mit Itō Jakuchū (1716–1800) und Soga Shōhaku (1730–1781) wurde Rosetsu als einer der „Three Eccentrics“ (san kijin) des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts Kyoto bezeichnet. Er studierte bei Maruyama Ōkyo (1733–1795), Gründer der Maruyama-Schule von Kyoto.
