Die charakteristische dekorative Qualität des Chikutō's Gemäldes ist hier in der rhythmischen Anordnung der Herons, die von ihrer schneebedeckten Barbecue mutig umrahmt werden. Die stark schwarz-weißen Kontraste und die repetitiven Muster von horizontalen Wäschen, die die weißen Formen der Vögel und Äste definieren, tragen zu einer Wirkung von grafischer Eleganz bei. Chikutō, geborener Arztsohn in Nagoya, zog 1815 nach Kyoto, wo er dem Kreis des Nanga-Künstlers Rai Sanyō (1780–1832) beitrat.
