Ernest Boulton proveniva da una famiglia di azionisti londinesi. Da adolescente si esibì in varietà come Lady Stella Clinton. Nel 1870 Boulton fu arrestato lasciando una palla a trazione. All'inizio fu accusato di malfattore pubblico, una carica minore usata per arrotondare i cross-dressers. Ma dopo che un chirurgo di polizia ha chiesto di ispezionare i glutei di Boulton l’accusa è stata cambiata in un reato: “cospirare e incitare le persone a commettere un reato innaturale.” Come Oscar Wilde doveva scoprire nel 1895, la sodomia era un grave crimine in Inghilterra. In The Queen v. Boulton la giuria ha restituito un verdetto di non colpevole. Boulton salpò per New York poco dopo, prese il nome di Ernest Byne, e continuò le sue performance di drag negli Stati Uniti. In questa foto Sarony il magnifico trambusto di Byne è l'altezza della moda vittoriana.
