Nel 1773 Nicolás Enríquez creò questo insieme di cinque dipinti per l'uso devozionale privato di Juan Bautista Echeverría, un mercante di origine spagnola. La scelta del soggetto di Echeverría è molto personale, riflettendo sia le sue radici basche che la sua residenza estesa in Messico. Enríquez ha attirato particolare attenzione su questo dipinto dell'omonimo di Echeverría, San Giovanni, che è mostrato battezzare Cristo nel Giordano. Il pittore si prese cura di dettagliare le gocce cristalline d’acqua versate sulla testa di Cristo e mostrare i suoi piedi sommersi nell’acqua fluente del fiume. Un'iscrizione evoca che l'immagine è stata dipinta "a causa della devozione" del suo proprietario.
