In questa immagine un marito di strada persegue una ragazza serva ma, realizzando che è stato osservato da una donna in una finestra, cambia corso. In seguito, invita sua moglie a impegnarsi in un'atmosfera in giardino per creare un alibi. La storia viene dalle Fables di Jean de La Fontaine, che hanno avuto un enorme successo nella Francia settecentesca come commento sui costumi sociali contemporanei, tra cui i ruoli di genere. Questo dipinto è uno dei nove oli su rame che Lancret dipinto a base di La Fontaine, che sono stati incisi durante il 1730 e 1740.
