Als einer der größten Wohltäter des Met, Louisine Havemeyer (1855–1929), diese Landschaft im Jahr 1907 erworben hatte, wurde es von Nicolas Poussin (1594–1665) gedacht. Heute wird es in der Regel von einem Imitator aus dem 17. Jahrhundert geglaubt, vielleicht von einem verlorenen Original von Poussin kopiert.
