Quando uno dei più grandi benefattori del Met, Louisine Havemeyer (1855-1929), acquistò questo paesaggio nel 1907, si pensava fosse di Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665). Oggi è generalmente creduto di essere da un imitatore seicentesco, forse copiato da un originale perso di Poussin.
