Cuando uno de los mayores benefactores del Met, Louisine Havemeyer (1855-1929), compró este paisaje en 1907, se pensó que era por Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665). Hoy generalmente se cree que es por un imitador del siglo XVII, quizás copiado de un original perdido por Poussin.
