Poussin è un pittore a cui tutti si meravigliano, ma forse a nessuno piace. Né era il suo desiderio di essere amato dal pubblico: ha dichiarato che la pittura dovrebbe affrontare la mente, non l'occhio o il cuore. Accanto a Descartes è l'esponente più conosciuto del razionalismo, il movimento francese del XVII secolo che credeva testardamente che la perfezione è raggiungibile se pieghiamo il mondo alle regole della ragione.
