Hotei (Chino: Budai) es uno de los personajes más queridos del budismo zen y se cree que es un avatar de Maitreya, el Buda del Futuro. Potbellied with a shaven head, this alegre, blissful monk is said to have vaamed the countryside in the late ninth to early tenth century in the area of Mount Siming, in southern China, carrying his few belongings in a patched fabric bag. Hotei fue representado por primera vez en la pintura poco después de su muerte y luego entró en el folclore de China y Japón como uno de los Siete Dioses de Buena Fortuna (Shichi fukujin). En sus pinturas tintas de personajes mitológicos e históricos de Asia oriental, Ogata Kōrin retrató a menudo a los siete dioses en un aspecto más juguetón, como se ve aquí.
