Ogata Kenzan, einer der großen Meister der bemalten Keramik in der Edo-Zeit (1615–1868), produzierte einen unverwechselbaren Stil frei gebürsteter Gräser, Blüten und Vögel als dekorative Motive für die Keramik. Seine Stücke wurden für ihre perfekte Beziehung zwischen Design und Form bemerkt. Er arbeitete oft an der Dekoration von Keramik mit seinem älteren Bruder Ogata Korin (1658–1716), wonach der Stil genannt Rimpa (Korin + pa Bedeutung “Schule”) benannt wurde. Eine von fünf Schalen, dieses Stück wurde ursprünglich als Servierschale für Essen gemacht.
