Ogata Kenzan, uno dei grandi maestri di ceramica dipinta nel periodo Edo (1615-1868), produsse uno stile distintivo di erbe, fiori e uccelli liberamente spazzolati come motivi decorativi per ceramica. I suoi pezzi sono stati annotati per la loro perfetta relazione tra design e forma. Ha spesso collaborato alla decorazione della ceramica con il fratello maggiore, Ogata Korin (1658–1716), da cui è stato nominato lo stile conosciuto come Rimpa (Korin + pa significa “scuola”). Una di una serie di cinque ciotole, questo pezzo è stato fatto originariamente come un piatto di servizio per il cibo.
