Ogata Kenzan, uno dei grandi maestri di ceramica dipinta nel periodo Edo (1615-1868), produsse uno stile distintivo di erbe, fiori e uccelli liberamente spazzolati come motivi decorativi per ceramica. Il famoso laboratorio di Kenzan a Kyoto ha introdotto usi innovativi di pigmenti e smalti per ceramica. Questa ciotola, dipinta in un disegno di canne colorate brillantemente, è stata utilizzata per servire cibo a vapore.
