Okada Hankō si dedicò agli studi confuciani e alla pittura nello stile dei maestri Ming e Qing cinesi, come aveva suo padre, Okada Beisanjin (1744-1820). Questa lettera ad un amico, scritta quando l'artista aveva quarantanove anni, offre un dono di fiori disposti in stile cinese, una pratica coltivata da literati giapponesi. Il tocco divertente: il regalo non era fiori reali ma schizzi di fiori, eseguiti in modo affascinante e libero che riflette la qualità spontanea e personale espedita dai pittori Nanga (litterati) nell'emulazione degli studiosi-artisti cinesi.
