Nachdem der norwegische Künstler Ole Peter Hansen Balling im Herbst 1864 Präsident Abraham Lincoln am Weißen Haus skizziert hatte, erhielt er die Erlaubnis, Lebensporträts führender Unionsbürger zu malen. Balling trat General Grant bei City Point, Virginia, während der Kampagne gegen Richmond und verbrachte fünf Wochen dort skizzieren Offiziere auf dem Feld. Philip H. Sheridan wurde im Shenandoah-Tal gemalt; die Porträts von William . Sherman und George H. Thomas wurden nach Kriegsende in Washington, D.C., durchgeführt. Das Bild von George A. Custer, zweiter von links, wird als das einzige Porträt gedacht, das von ihm aus dem Leben gemalt wird.
