Dopo che l'artista norvegese Ole Peter Hansen Balling aveva disegnato il presidente Abraham Lincoln alla Casa Bianca nell'autunno del 1864, ottenne il permesso di dipingere ritratti di vita dei principali generali dell'Unione. Balling si unì a General Grant a City Point, Virginia, durante la campagna contro Richmond e trascorse cinque settimane lì schizzi ufficiali sul campo. Filippo H. Sheridan fu dipinto mentre nella valle di Shenandoah; i ritratti di Guglielmo . Sherman e George H. Thomas furono fatti a Washington, dopo la fine della guerra. L'immagine di George A. Custer, secondo a sinistra, si pensa sia l'unico ritratto dipinto di lui dalla vita.
