Kalligraphie im unverwechselbaren Stil von Ono no Otsū, einer der prominentesten Kalligraphen der vormodernen Japan, ziert Blätter von dekoriertem Papier in diesem Paar von Alben mit Szenen aus The Tale of Genji von einem anonymen Tosa-Schulkünstler gemalt. Otsū schrieb meist in Kana, intersperiert mit flamboyant gemacht Kanji für poetisch evocative Worte. Die manchmal subtilen, manchmal dramatischen Variationen im Gewicht der Pinselstriche und der radikale Abstand zwischen Zeichen und Zeichenhaufen sind Marken ihres Stils. Otsū zeigte auch ihre Meisterschaft der "gestreuten Schrift" Technik, wobei sie kunstvoll die Register des Gedichts über die Seite und manchmal positionierten Zeilen des Gedichts aus der Sequenz angeordnet.
