Oswald Brierly arrivò in Australia nel 1842 e fu nominato direttore di una stazione di caccia a Twofold Bay nel Nuovo Galles del Sud. Ha registrato le attività offshore in numerosi disegni e acquerelli che mostrano la ricerca di balene per il loro blubber, che è stato utilizzato principalmente per la produzione di olio per il combustibile della lampada.
