Conosciuto ai contemporanei come "The Snuffler" per il suo apparente penchant per radicarsi nel sottobosco, Marseus van Schrieck aveva stretti legami con la cultura seicentesca dell'indagine scientifica. Questa immagine delle setole del pavimento della foresta con interazioni tra una lucertola, un serpente, le lumache e le farfalle, tutto all'ombra di un papavero. Piuttosto che dipingere fiori elegantemente disposti in un vaso, Marseus individua le sue fioriture in un ambiente naturale toccato con un elemento di minaccia.
