En una encrucijada, Hércules se encontró con Vice, que ofreció un camino de placer y facilidad, y Virtue, quien indicó un ascensión rugosa que conduce a la verdadera felicidad, una lección moral subrayada por el lema sobre la entablatura a la izquierda superior: [HO]NOR ET VIRTUS/[P]OST MORTE FLORET (Honor and Virtue Flourish after Death). Los largos relatos de Vice han arrancado el caldo del héroe. Un cuchillo jagged se apoya en el pecho de la esfinge que sostiene su trono.
