A un incrocio, Ercole incontrò Vice, che offrì un percorso di disinvoltura e di piacere, e Virtue, che indicava una salita robusta che porta alla vera felicità — una lezione morale sottolineata dal motto sulla entablatura a sinistra superiore: [HO]NOR ET VIRTUS/[P]OST MORTE FLORET (Honor e Virtue Flourish dopo la morte). I lunghi taloni di Vice hanno strappato le calze dell'eroe. Un coltello frastagliato si appoggia al seno della sphinx che sostiene il suo trono.
