Dipinta in Francia, dove Bruce visse dal 1904 al 1936, questa vita ancora raffigura frutta tagliata, un vetro con una paglia, forme a blocchi, e una colonna architettonica con linee pulite, chiarezza geometrica e tonalità fresche. Il dipinto emana una fermezza razionale, soprattutto se paragonata a Cubist ancora vive di Pablo Picasso e Georges Braque. Infatti, Objects on a Table segna una partenza deliberata e profonda dal Cubismo, che ha guadagnato associazioni negative durante la prima guerra mondiale perché la sua frammentazione della forma sembrava visualizzare la distruzione mortale del conflitto.
