Cézanne una volta proclamò: "Con una mela voglio stupire Parigi", e riuscì, anche nelle sue più ingannevoli nature morte, ad abbagliare e deliziare. Passando alle mele provenzali e alle pere Beurré Diel coltivate nelle vicinanze della tenuta della famiglia nei pressi di Aix, ha dispensato con la tradizionale prospettiva di un punto e ha esaminato il frutto, piatti, e tavolo da vari punti di vista —straight on, sopra e lateralmente.
