Questo dipinto doveva essere uno degli ultimi, se non l'ultimo, per Paul Gauguin. Lasciò il mondo dell'arte di Parigi per le isole polinesiani francesi nel 1891. Nel 1901, Gauguin andò a Hiva Oa, la più grande e più fertile delle isole Marquesas. Come nelle altre opere tahitiane, la natura che si incontra in questo dipinto è arcaica e sottolinea il legame originale tra uomo, animale e natura. L'habition umano visibile nell'angolo sinistro si fonde perfettamente con il paesaggio decorativo. Questo dipinto arrivò in Finlandia già nel 1908 come acquisizione in Ateneo
