Nuevo en el monasterio, un joven mira con alegría al espectador. Claramente lamenta sus votos. Imágenes ansiosos como ésta eran una piedra de arte romántico, y Gustave Doré era un maestro del género. Tomó su tema de la novela contemporánea de George Sand Sipiridion, en la que un joven novicio, Hermano Ángel, lamenta su aislamiento detrás del muro del claustro. Doré aumenta la desolación de la juventud contrastando su tensa postura y juventud con la fila de hombres viejos doblados y decrépitos. El propio Doré señaló el humor mullido de la predicación del joven y apuntó, “Esta noche estará sobre la pared.”71.2061
