Klee non abbracciò l'astrazione nella pura ricerca di un profondo obiettivo spirituale, come Kandinsky e Mondrian. Invece, come i suoi titoli indicano giocosamente, ha appena cercato di mantenere la realtà a bada. Quando l'artista iniziò a lavorare in olio nel 1919, dipinse una serie di piccole opere, per lo più su cartone, che avevano come oggetto paesaggi magici o giardini. Qui i piccoli abeti posti su una sorta di terreno Cubist evocano una foresta incantata.
