Ein Mann und Frau Porträt – minus der Frau. Schauen Sie genau hin, und Sie werden einen Hauch von Spitze in der unteren rechten Ecke des Gemäldes bemerken. Das ist alles, was bleibt von Dr. Gray Hassells erster Frau Eliza, die 1926 starb. Offenbar hatte seine zweite Frau, Brownie Goddard, ihren Vorgänger buchstäblich aus dem Bild herausgeschnitten. Dr. Hassell wurde in Ōamaru geboren und als Arzt in Schottland ausgebildet. Er verbrachte den größten Teil seiner Karriere für Poriruas psychisches Krankenhaus.
