Il Sarpsfossen, sul fiume Glomma a Sarpsborg nella Norvegia sudorientale, è una delle più grandi e potenti cascate d'Europa. La composizione pittoresca di questo lavoro, i colori vivaci e l'impasto audace dimostrano che l'artista non ha mai completamente abbandonato alcuni elementi dello stile decorativo in cui è stato inizialmente addestrato, che qui ha impiegato per effetto espressivo.
