L'episodio, ispirato alla biografia di Plutarco, è ambientato nello spazio chiuso di una tenda che si apre verso il campo affollato di soldati, come mostrato dalla sontuosa stoffa alzata sulla recinzione di legno. Avvolto in un mantello bianco luminoso, Giulio Cesare, seduto vicino a un treppiede con gambe zoomorfe cosparse di ginocchiere e circondato da scribi, si rivolge ai due scribi piegati sopra le compresse nell'atto di dettare i Commentari, tenendo uno stilo. fulcro del suo appartamento, il dipinto raffigura il grande leader nella somiglianza di Napoleone, un soggetto insolito che ha un precedente nel dipinto di Giorgio Vasari (c. 1560) per lo Scrittoio di Palazzo Vecchio a Firenze.
