Candid (o Candido) nacque a Bruges e si alleò a Firenze, dove iniziò la sua carriera di pittore e designer di arazzi. In questa grande pala d’altare, l’angelo Gabriele insieme a Dio Padre e lo Spirito Santo si precipitano nella camera di Maria in una fiammata di luce e di colore come annunciano che lei porterà un bambino. L'artista lo dipinse per una piccola chiesa o oratorio nel paese a sud di Firenze poco prima di lasciare l'Italia per Monaco, dove divenne pittore di corte ai duchi di Baviera.
