Rubens machte diese Ölskizze in Vorbereitung auf eine große Leinwand früher in Berlin (es wurde 1945 zerstört). Die letzte Komposition war proportional größer, mit Gott zog der Vater näher an die Jungfrau. Die wispy Anwendung der weißen Hervorhebung ist charakteristisch für Rubens malerisch Ölskizzen.
