Come molte altre opere di Rubens, questo dipinto illustra una storia delle metamorfosi del poeta romano Ovid (completo A.D. 8). Meleager ha ucciso un cinghiale mostruoso e presenta la sua testa ad Atalanta, con cui si è innamorato. Sullo sfondo c’è un Fury dai capelli serpente, un riferimento alla successiva faida sulla pelle del cinghiale che porterà alla morte di Meleager. Anche se uno splendido esempio della rappresentazione di Rubens di corpi consistenti e carnosi, il quadro non è in condizioni uniformemente buone. Le parti sono abrase e il drappeggio sulla spalla destra di Meleager è stato ricostruito sulla base di una copia di laboratorio.
