Als Rubens früheste datierte Arbeit gedacht, ist dieses Öl auf Kupfer eines der wenigen bekannten Gemälde des Künstlers vor seiner Abreise aus Antwerpen nach Italien im Jahr 1600 abgeschlossen und bezeugt seine Sensibilität als Porträtist. Der unbekannte Herr hält eine Uhr, ein Architekt oder Zeichnerplatz und ein paar Trenner, ein Entwurfswerkzeug. Diese können seinen Beruf verweisen, aber das umhüllte Zeitmesser ist eine konventionelle Allusion zur Sterblichkeit.
