Pensato per essere il primo lavoro datato di Rubens, questo olio su rame è uno dei pochi dipinti noti dell'artista completati prima della sua partenza da Anversa per l'Italia nel 1600 e attesta la sua sensibilità come ritrattista. Il signore sconosciuto tiene un orologio, una piazza dell'architetto o del disegnatore e un paio di divisori, uno strumento di redazione. Questi possono fare riferimento alla sua professione, ma il segnatempo è un'allusione convenzionale alla mortalità.
