Questo pannello fu probabilmente dipinto poco dopo che Rubens ritornò ad Anversa da Roma, dove era diventato uno dei principali maestri del movimento barocco. Il motivo di una colomba grezzo (simbolo dello Spirito Santo) si trova in diverse opere italiane contemporanee e si riferisce al sacrificio ultimo di Cristo. Una versione più grande della composizione, di Rubens e del suo laboratorio, è nel Los Angeles County Museum.
