Este panel fue probablemente pintado poco después de que Rubens regresara a Amberes desde Roma, donde se había convertido en uno de los principales maestros del movimiento barroco temprano. El motivo de una paloma tosca (símbolo del Espíritu Santo) se encuentra en varias obras italianas contemporáneas y se refiere al sacrificio final de Cristo.
