Diese Ölskizze ist Rubens Entwurf für ein Altar-Ensemble in der Kirche der Calced Carmelites in Antwerpen, die 1637–38 von dem Maler Gerard Seghers und dem Bildhauer Hans van Mildert ausgeführt wurde. Der auferstandene Christus triumphiert über Sünde und Tod (die Schlange und das Skelett) und wird von links nach rechts von Melchisedek, Elijah, dem heiligen Paulus und dem heiligen Cyril von Alexandria flankiert, die alle mit der Eucharistie verbunden waren. In den Säulen und oberen Ecken des Paneels bietet Rubens dem Mäzen eine Auswahl an architektonischen Motiven.
